This new machine type has come into focus thanks to a major order from ÖBB, the largest single order in Plasser & Theurer's history to date: 56 vehicles on firm order and a further 46 options.
Plasser CatenaryCrafters and MultiCrafters are compact, multifunctional, and modular vehicles that reach speeds of 120 km/h. The variety of ÖBB models in this segment has been reduced from twelve to three - extending functionality and flexibility. They are also available in the ModularCustomizing range in different sizes and with different distances between bogie pivots and/or wheelbases.

In terms of sustainability, its trimodal E³ drive is a special feature and enables emission-free, quiet work: in electric mode under the contact wire, the Plasser CatenaryCrafter travels to the worksite and the batteries are charged on board en route.
Battery power can be used to work on site for an entire shift. A diesel-electric generator is available as a fallback level, which can be operated with alternative, climate-neutral fuels.
Back in 2017, Plasser & Theurer presented the first battery-powered vehicle for overhead contact line installation and maintenance at the International Exhibition for Track Technology in Münster. Since then, more experience has been gained and the technology has been optimized:
The all-electric CatenaryCrafters are quieter by 20 dB(A) than their diesel-electric counterparts. This has clear advantages for residents living near night-time construction sites or urban worksites. On the work platforms and especially in tunnels, machine operators benefit from a noise- and exhaust fume-free working environment.
