On the track for the first time

One year after presenting the prototypes at iaf (27th International Exhibition for Track Technology) in Münster in May 2017, the first machine with the new look was ready to be deployed on the track.

The new Unimat 09-32/4S universal tamping machine was delivered to the Italian company GCF (Generale Construzioni Ferroviarie S.p.A.), the mother company of the Rome-based Rossi group. Following delivery in October 2018, the machine could start operation straight away. Stationed in Padua, it is in continuous operation, mainly on the main line from Milan to Venice, and GCF is very happy with it.

The Unimat 09-32/4S demonstrates its strengths both on plain lines and in turnouts. As it is able to work through the whole turnout in continuous action, even short possessions on high-speed lines can be optimally utilised. This type of machine is a true universal tamper, ideally suited for different types of turnouts, transfer points or large radii.

With its new design, the machine stands out visually on the track. The new cabin design with its large safety glass windows is a striking shape. Inside, the cabin provides an unprecedented working environment.

Machine control system equipped for Industry 4.0

The new SmartALC with its touch screen harmoniously blends into the new front cabin as the central control element. The operator has a full overview of the working area. The Data Recording Processor (DRP), a digital measuring recorder with touch panel, checks and documents the tamping and lining work.

A well thought-out operating concept is extremely important for the variety of functions provided by the Unimat 09-32/4S. Here we rely on a special machine control, the user-friendly Plasser Intelligent Control P-IC 2.0. Clear menu navigation via touch screens and universal operating units allow central access to all machine functions. For the important main functions there are additional operating controls in the armrests which guarantee safe and faster operation.

We have been working with a Unimat 09-32/4S on the ‘Direttissima’ high-speed line and on the old main line since 2002. Working in continuous action combined with 2-sleeper working is ideal for our applications. The new machine fits perfectly here.
