Flexible and precise: compact universal tamping machines in a new, modular design

Tamping machines for plain-line tracks and turnouts

  • From narrow track gauge to broad track gauge and for very tight structure gauges
  • Design for working in tight radii and networks with axle loads under 15 t
  • Choice of different engine manufacturers and emission standards ensures worldwide serviceability
  • Gauge change kits optionally available for use in networks with different track gauges or different wheel profiles
  • A self-loading device facilitates transport between networks without a track connection, can be integrated on request
  • The world’s leading tamping technology – tested under various operating conditions on every continent

For decades, our compact tamping machines have been very popular worldwide, and they work reliably. The new Plasser Compact series comprises machines in a modular design that offers several advantages. The modular design and the easily accessible positioning of important assemblies increase the efficiency of servicing and spare parts supply, which increases machine availability. Great emphasis was placed on safety and ergonomics when designing the cabs.

Proven technology in a new, modular design

  • Flexibly configurable machine types in two different lengths
  • Five universal tamping units for tamping plain lines and turnouts in 1- or 2-sleeper mode available
  • Easier to penetrate highly fouled ballast beds, lower fuel consumption, and the optional frequency control decreases wear and noise emissions
  • Analyses and displays track and working parameters digitally when configured with the DRP (Data Recording Processor)

Economical to purchase, operate, and maintain

  • High working output of up to 1,000 m/h
  • Long-lasting compaction thanks to 35 hz and constant amplitude
  • High quality of work thanks to reliable tamping technology
  • Robust 3-point chord measuring system
  • Suitable for a wide range of operating conditions

The fine art of turnout tamping

Turnout maintenance is a complex process. Turnouts differ greatly in design. This is why tamping machines need a great degree of variability to optimally adjust to the conditions at hand. This is why Plasser & Theurer offers various types of tamping units: they are all versatile in application. Their special design has been optimized for specific application scenarios. This allows you to react precisely to the requirements of your market.

Customize your machine with the perfect tamping unit for your requirements

1X/SH tamping unit

The tamping unit in split-head design with 16 rigid tamping tines allows the outer and inner tamping unit segments to be lowered separately. This increases flexibility and adaptability to different operating conditions. For example, it is possible to react quickly to obstacles in turnouts by locking individual segments. Thanks to 1-sleeper tamping, the tamping unit can also be used with irregular sleeper spacing or a heavily fouled ballast bed. Its low wear and low life cycle costs ensure that the tamping unit can be operated efficiently and cost-effectively in the long term.

2x4 tamping unit

The 2x4 unit is ideal for use where space on the track is limited and where there is only room for one tamping tine – especially on narrow-gauge tracks. This universal tamping unit has up to eight tilting tines, allowing flexible working, especially in turnouts. It also offers the option of tamping a sleeper in a turnout from one side only. The 1-sleeper tamping unit can also be used effectively with irregular sleeper spacing or in a highly fouled ballast bed.

2x8 tamping unit

This universal tamping unit is characterized by the best tamping results thanks to its high flexibility. With up to 16 tilting tines, the tamping cycle can be optimally adapted to the turnout. It also offers the option of tamping a sleeper in a turnout from one side only. Thanks to 1-sleeper tamping, the tamping unit can also be used with irregular sleeper spacing or a heavily fouled ballast bed.

4x4 tamping unit

The most versatile universal tamping unit in the Compact series is the standard for turnouts. It combines the flexibility of up to 16 tilting tines with split-head technology, which allows the outer and inner tamping unit segments to be lowered separately. They are prepared for any obstacle: completely tamp turnouts and achieve the best tamping results. The tamping unit is also suitable for use with irregular sleeper spacing, fouled ballast beds, or where there is only room for one tamping tine.

2X/SH tamping unit

2-sleeper tamping enables high working speeds of up to 1,000 m/h. Despite 32 rigid tamping tines, it is possible to react flexibly to obstacles by locking individual unit segments and lowering the outer and inner tamping unit segments separately. The 2X/SH unit is low-wear and an economical investment thanks to its low life cycle costs.

Functional expansion Plasser CompactTrailer

Our trailer extensions allow several functions to be combined in one machine. Integrating several work steps into one pays off. This saves you time, money, and staff and extends the application potential.

Integrate additional work functions such as ballast profiling, ballast levelling, and post-measuring, and adapt the CompactTamper or CompactStabilizer exactly to the desired requirement profile. This means you are ideally equipped for spot maintenance in particular. Whether equipped with a sweeping unit for plain-line track and turnout maintenance, ballast regulating machine, railway loading crane, additional tanks for diesel or water, recording measuring system or loading platform: requirements vary greatly depending on the country and area of application, with the equipment options aligning accordingly.

Mechanized maintenance train with machines from the Compact series

Perfectly matched

The interplay between different machines in the fleet formation will become more important.

The better the machines work together, the higher the achievable working output and quality – and, ultimately, the economic efficiency. The machines in the Compact series are perfectly matched in terms of working output and speed, making it ideal to use them together.

A time-tested system ensures safe train transport worldwide
Time-tested for decades, the MDZ mechanized maintenance train is a system for ensuring optimal results on existing and newly laid track. It refers to the use of several machine types in a formation to produce a sustainable track position.
